The quintessential Midi dress

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”–Leonardo da Vinci

Ever since becoming parents, the hubby and I rarely get to spend time alone with each other. So, when the opportunity presented suddenly couple of weeks ago I was both excited and overwhelmed. Suffice to say, I had a mild panic attack because I was like I don’t have anything to wear–at least anything that fits me perfectly now that I am five and half month postpartum. But I took a deep breath and really searched my closet and fished out this simple yet chic black midi dress.

I have been on a midi spree of late. I have sort of become a midi devout and why not? There is something so elegant, graceful and lady like about this silhouette. This length, first appeared in the style circles in the 1940s but  disappeared by the swinging 60s as the mini came into force and was seen progressive. Though it tried to make a comeback; the fashpack weren’t happy and it faced stiff resistance. However, since the  Naughties; the Midi has stamped its mark and is here to stay.

Fashion history aside, I picked this dress for its vintage vibe—a throwback to the demure 40s. I feel that the fashion industry is often not privy of the fact that real women sometimes have curves. On that note, I feel that Midi is universally acceptable whether you are young or old, curvy or skinny, trend setter or trend seeker. The mellifluous midi is effortlessly chic with a dollop of sophistication. I picked this dress from Sri Lanka five years ago when I went there for my honeymoon. I instantly fell in love with its twirl-worthy vibe. The “V” back I thought gives it a playful edge. I rarely showcase my tattoo but I love clothes with an interesting back and this dress shows-off my tattoo rather well.

I have kept it simple (partly because I did not have time to dress) and have completed the look with simple earrings from this post, my dancing girl necklace from this post and my slightly sparkly clutch from this post. I am also rather pleased to say that I have managed to go without shopping for one whole month and in the process discovered several great styling options right from my closet. But I cannot wait to pick some key pieces for the festival season next month. I think I deserve it 😉
