He who ruled scent ruled the hearts of men.
With just two days to Christmas, I would make a confession, I feel there is nothing better than receiving a perfume. During the winter months, this olfactory passion takes a rather deep turn. I have always felt as the temperature drops, our senses automatically get attracted to the fragrances that are warming, spicy and comforting. As it turns out, there is a definite science working there. I spoke to perfume expert, James Craven of Les Senteurs last year and he told me a little secret, ” Winter means darkness and bitter cold; all our senses are programmed to pick up things which are warming, cheering and comforting. Our olfactory senses also work the same,” said Craven. What this essentially means is that during winter we use a perfume as a quick-fix to feel confident, sexy, energised.
A good winter scent, thus, should have spicy, heavy or sweet, balmy quality to it. The prefect winter scent should also be strong, joyous and voluptuous keeping the festivities in mind.
So, here are some tried and tested perfumes for us girls and also the lovely men in our life.
As a purse-friendly option, I absolutely adore the two new White Musk perfumes from Bodyshop. The White Musk Libertine Eau De Parfum (pink bottle) has musk at its top, heart and base with a heady note of Turkish delight and sweet, comforting notes of baby orchid and Chantilly cream. It is a little genie in bottle that will keep you energised and fresh throughout the day. Although sweet, the fragrance actually stays throughout the day. Bodyshop’s White Musk Smoky Rose (last one) made up of bergamot, pink pepper, blackcurrant and tobacco flower with cruelty-free musk immortelle at the base, is lovely, strong without being overpowering and the best floral-oriental scent out there for a bargain price.
If you have some cash to spare, then I would definitely ask you to pick Jo Malone’s A shot of Oud over Mango (middle one). A very intriguing, sexy surprise. It has mango, black pepper, freesia and oud wood. This perfume is full of contradictions, which is why it is my winter pick: it is spicy and fruity, warm yet cool, light yet dark. The fact that it stays on you for days is another plus. I would say it is definitely not for the faint-hearted; it is for all those chameleon girls out there. The ones who live by their own rules and the ones who don a floral dress with an edgy biker leather-jacket. Perhaps that’s why it is my favourite. 😉
Calvin Klein launched Dark Obsession for Men earlier this year. As the name suggests it is dark, opulent and intensely sensual. A modern aromatic-oriental fragrance; it begins with bitter notes of Brazilian green mandarin, guarana and absinthe. whilst woody tones of French clary sage, fir resin and white vetiver from its heart wraps you in a heady comfort and Madagascar vanilla bean, suede and labdanum in its base gives you warmth. It is masculine sensuality in a bottle.
Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium (pour Homme) was launched way back in 1995 but it continues to be a top-pick by many. The top notes are black currant and star anise; middle notes are galanga and pepper whilst base notes are tolu balsam, atlas cedar and bourbon vanilla. An intense, spicy perfume this would be prefect for winter as it stays for a long time while it can get too overpowering for summer. It is powerful oriental perfume and best kept for evenings.
Davidoff Cool Water is a masculine and sporty fragrance. The hubby’s favourite; something about the blue bottle and notes of ocean air tumble instantly reminds me of the seas. it has fresh top notes of peppermint and orange blossom. Notes of ocean air tumble with mint, coriander, geranium, cedar, oak moss and musk at its heart gives it a fresh, contemporary feel. I would also give it brownie points for evoking the dynamic vigour of ocean and nature. This one is also fresh enough for daytime yet sensual and teasing enough for date nights.
