How my blog started

I have loved writing right from school days. My high school ambition was to become a journalist/writer. And I was fortunate enough to fulfill this dream. I worked in India as a journalist before moving to UK. Moving to UK, was a bit of a shock, not culturally mind you but because wherever I went with my job application, I was mostly judged for my colour. I am not implying every industry in UK is like that, it is not. But Media is a tough place and at least I found that it is impossible to continue here without a God father or God mother. Now, I do not have any.

All I had (and have) is my grit, determination and the loving support of my family. I started and following various blogs like Girl with curves and decided to start one of my own.  I started this blog few years ago mainly to keep my love for writing alive. This is the reason, why you won’t find me only discussing a certain niche but a plethora of subjects. Whether it is a long term success solution or not, I do not know. What I know is this: find your passion and give it your sweat, blood and life. Style with Substance, has gone through several changes and like me it is ever evolving.

Blogging has also helped me in my career. I got lot of writing gigs through this platform, an opportunity to work for some of the finest magazines in UK like Time Out, London. I also eventually became an assistant editor with a start up magazine and after my maternity break blogging helped me to delve into the world of digital marketing. So, if you are one of those who want to know what blogging entails, just grab your laptop and delve in.

Advice to new bloggers:

To all new bloggers out there I would say stick at it and not give up. Even today, I have days when I just want to give up. When I feel who will ever read this? But I try to shake those negative feeling and keep prodding along. Don’t give up; the best things come to those who don’t give up.

Be consistent, when I had more time in hand I used to post 3-4 times a week. Now, I have way less time in hand but I still make it a point to post at least once a week. I know it is not always possible but I try and fit this in no matter what.

My third nugget of advice would be to be friendly, speak to other bloggers, get to know them, follow them on social media and learn from them. Blogging has given me some really good like minded friends and acquaintances. Now, for the best part.

As a first time mum, juggling a plethora of things from work to studies and of course my baby, one of the things that I miss the most is having my parents nearby. I often wish how things would have been easier if babies came with a manual.

While I don’t consider myself to be an extremely technologically advanced person, I thank the heavens every day for one invention—mobile phone and cheaper international calling plans. Truth be told, being a “dummy” mummy means to be on a call a lot of times asking my mum or MIL for tips and suggestions.

I’ve been looking for a mobile connection for international calls which makes life easier and yet does not put a hole in my pocket. Enter Lebara. Lebara Mobile provides SIM cards and Pay As You Go connections. The telecommunications group is especially targeted towards the needs of international communities and migrant workers.

The company operates in countries like Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. With plans starting from as less as 2p, it means I can speak to my family as often as I want without much guilt. I personally prefer their UK Plus plans which has a variety of options for every budget.

For many like me, who has made another country their new home, we are constantly looking for ways to stay connected with our family and friends without much hassle. Needless to say, you also need an option that will keep your bank account happy. In that regard, Lebara ticks the box rather well and I am pretty chuffed with a service that makes my life a tad bit easier.

This is a sponsored post but the opinions are my own.

Hope you enjoyed this post. Have a great week.  Do show me your love with your likes and comments and don’t forget to follow me.

As I mentioned here, mobile really is everything in today’s digital age. Whether you are an iPhone fan person or an Android devotee; chances are you want to get your fix of daily news, reading and shopping with just minimum taps on your phone. While it is difficult to get full fledged sartorial experience on your phone; there is no denial that you can get a quick fashion fix.

As a fashion enthusiast and street style blogger, here are my top favourite tried and tested apps. Yes, new fashion apps keep coming every other day but these top three have withstood the test of time. Moreover, they seem to increasing their user-friendly factor. I have chosen apps that are available for free and can be used on both Android and Mac systems.

ASOS:

I am a self-confessed ASOS fan. In fact, hubby always quips that if ASOS were a guy I would be having a steamy affair with it. This comprehensive app is like Aladdin’s Cave which will leave you spoilt for choice. ASOS should be your go-to app, if you are looking for fast, affordable and totally on trend shopping adventures. My favourite bit is the daily edit feature which showcases carefully picked highlights from their website.

Polyvore:

Another highly addictive app; I regularly use Polyvore to create style mood boards. It enables you to pull out different items from various retailers and create a set/ style board. It is like a calling card for your inner stylist. This app takes me back to my school days when I would endlessly doodle and draw on my notebook creating zillion things. It is exactly that but instead of stick figures, I can create various looks. It is also one stop for getting style and interior inspirations. I also love how it blends the editorial sensibility of a fashion magazine with the easiness of social network.

There is no denial that I love street style (duh, hence the blog). In fact, I find it more inspirational than runway shows. Users can upload their images and tag their outfits. The unique style-finder feature allows you to follow those whose style you admire. I personally like to use it to see how other fashion enthusiasts are styling things I have. It is like style school with inspiration from style mavens around the globe.
